It was evening. The homeless animals displaced by the digging and felling at Arunachala Hill had been given shelter at Mum Lioness's cave. The cubs were telling them all stories about this side of the hill.
During all this, one monkey was repeatedly whispering to another who was asking her to keep quiet. Mum Lioness finally asked them, what is it?
This side of the hill seems so peaceful, said the monkey.
It sure is, said Mum Lioness.
We have never ventured here for generations, said the monkey.
Mum: Why is that?
Monkey: It's like Forbidden for us. Called the Forbidden Forest.
"WHAT???? WHY ???" exclaimed the cubs.
We have heard, well ... local legend on our side of the hill has it that there are three huge terrifying lionses on this side.
Stripes answered, I have searched for them, extensively, (Me too, Spotty added) but there were no traces of any such lionses at all.
The monkeys looked relieved. Did you try googling?, persisted a tiny one.
According to my school textbooks there are actually four of them, said a small monkey.
Were any names mentioned, inquired Mum carefully, pretending not to be interested.
Yes Yes, they exist, shouted Arunacub.
Mum Lioness was shocked. the cat would be out of the bag!
According to my textbooks, and some very authoritative sources, said Omcub, they were named ... let me think ... Rama and Lakshman
Arunacub: And Shatrughan
Tirucub: And Bharat.
Well, they did exist like a few thousand years ago, explained Mum Lioness with a nervous laugh. Mum and Stripes breathed a sigh of relief.
The monkeys tried to memorize the names so they could tell their friends and schoolmates. Mum Lioness immediately wrote it down for them on slips of paper and handed it out. And remember it was several thousand years ago, she kept adding.
She thought the topic was safely over.
They do still comeback now and then, said Arunacub suddenly.
Mum Lioness went pale.
Yup, when someone's in trouble they come to help.
Sometimes as lions, sometimes as elefinks.
Sometimes even sparrows or eagles.
All the animals were listening in awe. They had never heard so many details about the legendary huge terrifying lions.
And were they like sixteen feet tall?, asked a giraffe.
Oh! that's an understatement, said Arunacub.
Tiru: Thirty is probably more correct.
Spotty: And they grow up much bigger.
Yeah, they are thirty feet when born, said Om cub.
And Mum Lioness, er i mean their mother is like fifty or sixty feet tall.
Is?, asked a hippo.
I mean 'was'. A few thousand years back.
And what about the fourth lion. There are stories that he was different, asked the deer.
(Spotty wiped a drop of sweat off his brow)
Om: Oh yes!
Tiru: Very!
Arunacub: You see there was a tiger also.
Hippo: Really ?
Om: Yes, he prayed to Bhagavan Ramana for a little child. Whom he could play with and love and take care of. And Bhagavan Ramana sent him a little le --
"Lion", interrupted Tiru.
"A tiny lickle lion cub who stayed six-months old forever."
Forever? and he was little, you said.
Very lickle -- only twenty feet tall. A midget by our, er by their standards.
"I don't believe all these folk tales." said one old monkey annoyed. "All nonsense!"
"Oh yes, absolutely", agreed Stripes, "but fun for telling the little ones, and keeping them occupied!"
"Time to sleep", called out Mum Lioness. "Everyone to bed!"
